[blog-image src=”https://trccompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trc-award-2013.jpg” ]MIDLAND, MICH. – Three Rivers Corporation has earned the Associated Builders and Contractors National Safety Excellence Award. The award recognizes Three Rivers for its exemplary safety performance and programs during 2013. This award demonstrates that Three Rivers’ is dedicated to working safe.

The ABC National Safety Excellence Awards recognize companies who exhibit a continued commitment to jobsite safety and whose safety performance and programs are judged to be exemplary by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Committee. Awards are based on data submitted via STEP applications, essay questions and video interviews with company Presidents/CEOs/Principals about their corporate safety culture. Award categories are based on a company’s total work-hours per calendar year and placement within the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

This is Three Rivers’ sixth time winning this award since 2000. You are only eligible to apply for this award every other year. “This is an honor to receive an award like this, we are proud of our work force and their dedication to safety and to “Walk the Talk” when it comes to safety performance.” said Paul Crivac, Three Rivers Corporation Safety Director. Paul indicates that reduced injuries reduce construction costs, improve employee morale and improve productivity. Three Rivers Corporation outperformed contractors from around the nation to win this prestigious award.

To qualify for a Safety Excellence Award, a company must first demonstrate the highest levels of performance – Platinum – in ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP). Prerequisites include an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable rate that is below the national average and performance that is clearly “a step above” in 20 key safety program components. Three Rivers Corporation has re-emphasized their safety program by branding the “Walk the Talk” slogan to help keep their workers focused on the highest safety performance.

“Safety isn’t just a state of mind. It’s a way of life at Three Rivers. We ask our employees to Walk the Talk every day.” said Dan Kozakiewicz, Three Rivers Corporation President and CEO. That way of life revolves around a 10-point safety program, constant evaluation and implementation of new processes designed to reduce injuries.

ABC formally recognizes Three Rivers for its excellent safety programs and performance at the ABC 24th Annual Excellence in Construction Awards at the Grand Wailea in Maui, Hawaii, on February 11, 2014.

[blog-image position=”right” src=”https://trccompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/dowdiamond_02-480×282.jpg” alt=”Dow Diamond” caption=”Dow Diamond”]MIDLAND – Three Rivers Corp. has received one of the nation’s most prestigious building awards for its construction work on Dow Diamond, home of the Midwest League’s Great Lakes Loons baseball team.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced this week that Three Rivers has won its National Excellence in Construction Award.

“This is a tremendous honor for us,” says Three Rivers President Dan Kozakiewicz. “But it also says a lot about the area’s building trades and our area as a whole, because this was truly a community project.”

Construction of the $26-million baseball facility was a unique challenge, says Kozakiewicz, because it was done in about half the time of comparable projects. “From the time the contract was signed until opening day, we had a little more than one year,” he says, “and there were people who didn’t think it could be done.”

Among those were the architects, HOK Sport, who said the project would take at least 24 months. But accustomed to fast-track procedures used in working with its industrial customers, Three Rivers was able to begin construction with only conceptual drawings and complete the project in 141/2 months.

Through value engineering during the process, Three Rivers helped save more than $2 million on the project’s cost. Innovations here included using crushed brick recycled from a building on the site for the warning track surface, developing a roofing alternative and revisions to the structural framing.

The 5,400-seat stadium was built almost entirely by mid-Michigan workers and used a number of products produced locally. Dow Chemical’s STYROFOAM™ insulation products were used in several applications. The stadium was the first commercial application of Dow’s SAFE-TOUCH™ PET Fiber insulation. And solar panels, used to generate a substantial percentage of the stadium’s electricity, featured components created by Hemlock Semiconductor, a subsidiary of Dow Corning Corporation.

“This stadium was a big economic project and a rallying point for the community,” says Kozakiewicz. “We felt it was important to make it as ‘local’ as we could.”

Crews also overcame a number of unique obstacles, Kozakiewicz says. “There was a lot of site remediation issues that we didn’t know at the beginning,” he says, noting that parts of the site formerly housed five service stations with underground storage tanks. The Michigan Department of Transportation was also doing major roadwork nearby.

The biggest challenge, Kozakiewicz says, was the field itself. “There was only one way we’d have a natural turf field ready in April of 2007,” he says, “and that was to lay the sod in the fall” of 2006. This put even more limitations on access. “We had to pay close attention to the construction sequence. All our hoists and other heavy equipment had to work around the field.”

The project was completed with no on-the-job injuries, illnesses or precautionary ambulance runs. “We had a meticulous eye on safety,” Kozakiewicz says. Contractors participated in safety training programs and meetings. Some of those sessions included guests such as former Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda and the Great Lakes Loons’ mascot, Lou E. Loon.

ABC’s Excellence in Construction program was designed to offer public recognition for excellent performance in the merit shop construction field. The award honors all members of the construction team: contractor, owner and design team. The competition is open to all construction projects completed by ABC member firms in 2007. Winning projects were selected based on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, safety, innovation and cost.
